The Lion program weaves traditional Scouting concepts of character development, leadership skills, personal fitness, and citizenship into age-appropriate and fun activities for the Scouts and their parents. Lions work with their fellow Lion Scouts and each Scout’s adult partners. The program is focused on parent planning and delivery with support from the Cub Scout pack using literature specifically designed for the younger age group.
Lions earn the Lion badge at the end of the year after completing their other Lion activities.
For Ages 5/6 or Kindergarten
Your scout needs a rank-appropriate uniform and handbook that they will use throughout the year. Rank-specific shopping lists (including optional items) can be found below. These items can be purchased in-person or online at a Scout Shop.
See the Scout Gear page for more details on where to get your gear.
The official handbook is a Scout’s guide to their year in Cub Scouting. They can find everything necessary to complete requirements and many other Family Scouting activities.
Scouts should purchase the Cub Scout uniform, as shown below.
The following items are encouraged but optional for participation in the program.
Uniform pants, shorts, or skirt
Uniform Cap
Cub Scouts earn Adventures that are specific to their grade and rank. A number of Adventures must be completed to earn the badge of rank for each grade level. Completion of Adventures is how the aims of character, citizenship, leadership, and personal fitness are developed.
To earn the Lion badge of rank, you must complete six required Adventures and any two elective Adventures.
The requirements and information necessary to earn the Lion rank are included in the Lion Cub Scout Handbook and are also detailed on the Cub Scout Lion Adventures Resource Page.
