The Arrow of Light is the highest achievement in Cub Scouting, and the only Cub Scout Award that can be worn in Scouting America. Even Adult leaders may wear a special square knot on their uniform to signify that they earned the Arrow of Light as a Cub Scout.
The award design is a yellow arrow with a rising sun. There are multiple explanations for this design:
Achieving the award signifies a new step in the journey, as the sunrise signifies a new day.
The seven rays in the sun represent: wisdom, courage, self-control, justice, faith, hope, and love. These value represent those of a well-rounded person.
The seven rays of the sun represent the days of the week, and serves as a reminder that Scouts should do their best every day.
Like the sun, Cub Scouts should be a light for those around them.
For Ages 10/11 or in 5th Grade
Your scout needs a rank-appropriate uniform and handbook that they will use throughout the year. Rank-specific shopping lists (including optional items) can be found below. These items can be purchased in-person or online at a Scout Shop.
See the Scout Gear page for more details on where to get your gear.
The official handbook is a Scout’s guide to their year in Cub Scouting. They can find everything necessary to complete requirements and many other Family Scouting activities.
Arrow of Light Scouts transition to the brown uniform, which if they continue on to Scouting America, they will wear throughout that program as well.

Cub Scouts earn Adventures that are specific to their grade and rank. A number of Adventures must be completed to earn the badge of rank for each grade level. Completion of Adventures is how the aims of character, citizenship, leadership, and personal fitness are developed.
To earn the Arrow of Light badge of rank, you must complete six required Adventures and any two elective Adventures.
The requirements and information necessary to earn the Arrow of Light rank are included in the Arrow of Light Scout Handbook and are also detailed on the Cub Scout Arrow of Light Adventures Resource Page.
